Ingmar Bergman

Ingmar Bergman (1918–2007) was a Swedish filmmaker whose work remains central to twentieth-century cinema. Across more than sixty films, he returned to questions of faith, silence, desire, and emotional rupture, often set against spare interiors and stark Nordic landscapes. From the early collaborations with cinematographer Gunnar Fischer to the luminous black-and-white imagery shaped with Sven Nykvist, Bergman’s visual language is inseparable from his themes. Working in parallel with a prolific theater career, he built a close ensemble of actors whose performances gave intimate, searching form to his meditations on the psyche.
