Michael Mann (1943) builds films around men in total command of their craft — thieves, detectives, fugitives, operators — and then watches that command slowly fail them. Thief and Heat frame professional obsession as both discipline and trap, while The Insider and Ali move toward figures whose expertise becomes a form of exposure. Visually, Mann favors surfaces that hold pressure: glass, neon, night water. His digital work in Collateral and Miami Vice pushed that instinct further, trading polish for unease.
