Dr. Caligari Figure

Robert Wiene (1873–1938) was a German filmmaker whose work helped define the visual language of silent-era Expressionism. Best known for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, he embraced distorted sets, stylized performances, and psychological unease to transform horror into a study of perception and madness. Though he directed films across multiple genres, his Expressionist works remain the cornerstone of his legacy, influencing generations of filmmakers drawn to dreamlike imagery and subjective storytelling. Forced into exile following the rise of the Nazi regime, Wiene spent his final years working outside Germany.
