Yorgos Lanthimos

Yorgos Lanthimos (b. 1973) is a Greek filmmaker known for dark comedies and psychologically unsettling dramas shaped by rigid social systems and emotional detachment. After emerging internationally with Dogtooth, he expanded into English-language films including The Lobster, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite, and Poor Things. Lanthimos’s films often place intimacy and cruelty within highly controlled worlds where behavior feels strange, ritualized, and faintly absurd. Moving between satire and discomfort, he builds narratives defined by restraint, tonal unpredictability, and sharply observed human contradiction.
